Nutrition

A few years ago I came across a book written by a veterinarian on canine health and nutrition. Reading it, I was shocked to learn about the low quality (and potentially unhealthy) ingredients that are used in the production of the vast majority of popular commercial brand dog foods. Additionally, it made me aware just how difficult it can be to choose the right dog food for a beloved pet when one does not know what to look for. So I researched a variety of books and internet sites that enabled me to make educated decisions regarding the selection of choice, healthy dog food alternatives. Below you will find a few website links to help you get started down a path of self-education on how dog food is made and what to look for when choosing a dog food for your best friend.

Based upon my research and personal observations, I'm firmly convinced that when dealing with canine skin and coat problems, establishing a healthy diet for your pet is essential. Further, my investigations persuaded me that many other canine health issues have been related to poor nutrition and dietary habits as well.

Whenever my clients approach me with health concerns about their pets, I always encourage them to begin by seeking the advice of a competent, professional veterinarian. Secondly, I encourage them not to underestimate the importance of establishing a healthy diet for their pet. I have seen dramatic changes in many of my clients' pets when they've put them on a healthy brand of dog food that uses only the finest ingredients.

Through my studies and experience, I have created a diet for my dogs that I believe best satisfies their nutritional needs.  I am currently following a diet based on a few books I've been reading.  The main book being
Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kymythy R. Schultze, C.C.N., A.H.I.  The others are listed below for reference.

The bottom line is that nutrition is important for our pets, just as it is for us. There is a difference in the nutritional value of dog foods out there, and I believe it is important that we provide our pets with the best. After all, for all the joy and love they bring to us, don't they deserve it?

Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kymythy R. Schultze, C.C.N., A.H.I.
This is a wonderful book and currently the one I refer to most for my dogs diet at this time.  It is an easy book to read and understand.  It is written with common sense in mind and I highly suggest it as a part of your pet book library.

Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats by Richard H. Pitcairn, D.V.M., PH.D. & Susan Hubble Pitcairn
This was the book that inspired me some years back to start learning more about my pets nutritional needs and the differences in dry dog foods nutritionally and the manufacturing practices.  This is another book I recommend to add to your library.
